Normally the COBRA subsidy kicked in right away but with new provisions in the stimulus bill newly laid-off people have been left with the full cost of COBRA, and been told they will be reimbursed “Later after the kinks have been worked out”

What are your thoughts?
Blonde: perhaps you should get your facts right there has been a subsidy for years:
It is called the HCTC:

John you and Blonde need to research - you know not of what you speak.
Again Blonde if you do this for a “living” you have had to encounter this before.

I got a postdoctoral fellowship in University of Toronto for two years. The job offer did not mention anything about benefits just about my yearly salary. Even the UT does not pay benefits for my kids, will Ontario government support any health related benefits for my family? I dont have a PR, will my kids get child allowance?

I have excellent health benefits in my current job. I don’t have to pay for any doctor appointments, office visits, or prescriptions. Where can I find the same kind of benefits?

You cannot receive medical benefits if you have had a high income in the past. Even if you have fallin on hard times; and are no longer in that income bracket.

I am a non-US citizen and need this information to do a case.

Specifically:
1) Is health insurance compulsory for everyone?
2) What happens if someone cannot afford it?
3) In the event that a medical procedure needs to be done, does health insurance cover all the bills? Does the patient need to pay anything extra?
4) Does the patient have any say over what kind of procedure he can take? Say if 2 treatments are available for his condition, can the patient choose the more expensive treatment? And if so, is it covered by the insurance?

Thanks for reading this. Your help in answering any part of the questions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks to those who have responded so far.

I would like to further ask:

Does a health insurance contract state that it will only cover the “normal” rates for a procedure? For eg. if there are 2 possible treatments for a disease, 1 of which is more expensive but more effective than the other, will the patient only be covered by the LESS expensive one?

Or is it a case in which the patient can opt for the more expensive one and “top-up” the difference?

This is a crucial question to my understanding the case. Thanks!

I understand that GIVING is a wonderful thing.
Most generous thing to do.

But… instead of forcing the Rich people to help out the poor people…

Why not give poor people jobs with good Healthcare benefit?

Just tell CEO, Corporations and companies to train people
and hired them. Forget resume, Forget background check.
Just pay money to train people and hire them right away.
Give them flexible jobs. Time clock.
Let’s them work whenever they want and need to.

And no more job interview.

And Government should give tax refund to Corporation for
hiring people with only high school diploma, disabled, criminals,
and people who can’t compete and so on…

Good idea?

When you say criminal.. do you mean because they broke the law? Do you believe there should be no repentence? Give them a chance to pay for their illegal entry (roughly 10K after attorney and appliation fees… a lot more than entering legally.. Ive done the research for a friend). We should allow them to finance the dollars (a lot of them can’t afford it up front.. I agree)…
Economically speaking and as it relates to US security, why would you want them to stay in the shadows? Doesn’t make any sense.. they are not going anywhere.. deportation is near impossible and would create huge gaps in our current economy.
Lets talk economics (I have a masters from Duke in finance)… lets do it simply.
12,500,000 Immigrants X $10,000 a piece…..mmmm… that would be a $125,000,000,000 surplus to the economy… in addition, they would be required to finally pay for their taxes (those that are currently being paid under the table), contribute to the healthcare system (rather than us citizens currently paying for their 4%). INS wont be so saturated and now they can focus on the non-registered… (possibly security threats) People who use the money factor are clueless… we can’t fill the lower paying jobs.. look up southern California (lots of illegals)… restaurant owners, hospitals, cleaning services, and farms are paying a premium to fill these “lower class” jobs… they still cant fill them… This is everywhere in the country.. do the research… Economically, it doesn’t make sense..
Lets talk the criminal avenue… but they are illegal criminals…? they broke the law… give me a break.. have you ever stole anything when you were younger.. ever drove 46 in a 45 to get somewhere just a little quicker… ever cheated a little on your taxes… these are all crimes my friend… even speeding or cruising through a stop sign… this country is governed by over 29,000 federal laws, and on average in my state (NY) an additional 120,400 penal law codes (increases about a 900 per year)… not including vehicle and traffic law… Everyone bends the rules.. and commits a crime… time to time.. Many illegals come here for a chance for a better life… if you were in Mexico, living in poverty, wouldn’t you at least try for the benefit of your family? Think big picture… there are enough punative damages in fines they would have to pay.. (to make it fair for those who came here the pain in the rear legal way) if they don’t, seek them out deport them permanently…. Use the surplus dollars to firm up the border… help the economy, and most importantly enforce the laws/borders moving forward..

If you are against socialized medicine, will you accept Medicare benefits when/if you are qualified to receive them?

Also, if you are a vet…I am and I do…do/would you accept care from the VA?
I am disappointed. The silence from those who oppose national healthcare for all is deafening. Hope this addendum perks things up a little.

Can I owe a former employer for medical benefits I received?
I left a job over a year ago that was commisioned based. Today I received a letter telling me that I owed them money for my benefits. My earnings didn’t cover my cost of deductions for my benefits.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me. Am I obligated to pay them?
